Ubuntu is a Linux distribution for desktops, laptops, and servers. It is based on Debian GNU/Linux. Ubuntu aims to provide an up-to-date yet stable operating system for the average user, and features a strong focus on usability, regular releases, and ease of installation. Ubuntu is sponsored by Canonical Ltd, owned by South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth. The name of the distribution comes from the southern African concept of ubuntu which may be rendered roughly as "humanity toward others", "we are people because of other people", or "I am who I am because of who we all are", though other meanings have been suggested. This Linux distribution is named Ubuntu as it is expected to bring the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world. Ubuntu is free software and users can share it among each other.

True dual screen management

Still in Hardy Heron it's difficult if not impossible to dynamically change the management of external screens and projectors. It's a highly demanded feature as the Ubuntu Brainstorm rating indicates.

2008-07-26 20:07 Visvo Well the most OS could handle this, why should Ubuntu doesn't support it too?

2008-04-20 13:13 martin f. krafft I really hope this will be implemented on the X level, rather than anything GNOME or Ubuntu-specific

2008-04-04 12:57 maemst @martin: Sorry, I'm not an X developer thus I hope that some one else will sign in to implement the feature.

2008-04-03 09:31 martin f. krafft I would appreciate more information on how you plan to implement this.

GUI tool for Internet connection setup

Standard GUI tool for Internet connections managment (like pppconfig, pppoeconf but GUI) that supports many connection types (Dial-Up, ADSL etc.) can be very useful for new users.

Create a "Unified Package Installer" keeping non-Programmers in Mind

A unified Package Installer, any linux software found on net should be installed easily with good User interface too.

Implementations:

1) A unified Package Installer, any linux software found on net should be installed easily.

Explanation of Problem:

I want to turn to Linux (Ubuntu especially) But only thing Holds me Back is Problems like

"We are not able to install below Packs because we don't Know how to do that
1) tar.gz
2) rpm
3) Source Tarball .gz
4) tar.bz2 etc
software's available from the popular software sites like Gimp, Blender etc."

If all dependencies come pre-installed with ubuntu will help alot for New Migrators to Linux.

Use linux-libre

The official linux kernel at kernel.org is non-free. But there is a fork of the kernel called linux-libre which takes out the non-free blobs out of the current official kernel. I don't know why nothing is being done about this issue, because this is an actual GPL violation that's happening now.

2008-04-22 16:50 martin f. krafft This feature has also been proposed under Debian. I would suggest that any such effort happens at the Debian level such that *both* projects can profit.

"Secure Server" package

A package that depends on a suite of security and server management software that has been well integrated and tailored to Ubuntu Server (e.g. snort, prelude, aide, samhain, ossec, bastille, tiger, nessus, nagios...). Currently such packages exist but they are not integrated and there is no single GUI to access them. Providing such a security package could boost linux server usability as ubuntu did for desktop. And it could improve ubuntu server's image as a rather "insecure" server option.
